I was enrolled in 9 units, I dropped one class, and it caused me to be below 6, therefore my grant was revoked, and I now have to pay 6400. I was tolled that if I re enroll in the course, it will erase the fine, but now that I'm re enrolled, I've been tolled that it doesn't make a difference.
Are there any options left?

Retroactive enrollment, still have to pay grant money, what do?
↧
What should I do..
I'm at a pretty bad situation here. I have brought myself to probation. Not academic probation, but probation because I have dropped too many classes and am under the satisfactory completion rate. I had an inexperienced counselor/school therapist that sort of made me believe that if I withdrew due to depression that I would receive incompletes or no W's. I recieved all W's in 4 classes and that put me on probation. What makes it so much worse is that I wasn't failing any classes during that term (2 B's and 2 C's) and I know i probably could have done well, however I knew that if I stayed in class I was going to lose my mind. I just wasn't stable at all. Anyways, I got re-approved since over the summer I got an A in my class and was doing better mentally. This term however, I was an idiot in taking one of the hardest math classes allowed at my schoold. I should have waited until I was further ahead and out of probation. I currently have 2 A's and a B with my math class at a 69% not including midterm or final. I don't think I did bad on my midterm but I don't know. If the worst case scenario happens and I fail my class would I have a chance of being approved again for aid? I have well above a 2.0 in my GPA so I'm not too worried about that. I also have the option of making the class pass/no pass so I was wondering if a D would be sufficient enough for me to keep my aid by either grade or by pass/no pass. This course is irrelevant since I am no longer pursuing a major for that class. What are my chances/best bet? (I'm being overly paranoid I know...)

Raise.me - one parent's report on how it works and whether it's worth it
Raise.me is a website where students are awarded microscholarships for incremental achievements such as getting a good grade in a class or participating in an EC or sport. I thought I'd kick the tires and tell you what I found.
I filled out two years worth of info for my S to get an idea of how the site works and what kind of money we'd be looking at.
How it works: Colleges set certain amounts for things like getting an A (or a B) in a class, taking an AP class, getting a certain score on a standardized test, doing ECs or volunteer hours, etc. You fill out a profile listing what classes you've taken, your SAT score, your ECs, etc. Then you click-to-follow the colleges you're interested in. When you do, you're shown a tally for each school based on the data you entered.
The amounts are not the same at each school. One school might offer $400 for every A and $300 for every B, while another gives $200 for As and nothing for Bs.
I used S's real data for his freshman year, then best guess data for his sophomore year. At the mo, he's got a 3.9uw/4.5 weighted GPA, some APs and dual-enrollment classes, around 80 volunteer hours and a couple of ECs, including one leadership position.
I didn't select every school, just the ones that had some potential interest for us. All numbers are 4-year totals, so mentally divide by 4 for an annual amount.
Here are the results:
Denison - $32,730 ($8,183/yr, frex)
Lawrence - $27,140
Southwestern - $25,690
Tulane - $12,050
Michigan State - $12,040
Oberlin - $8,090
Texas Tech - $2,840
My guess is that these numbers would roughly double once you input 4 years of HS data, though I'd also guess that some of the schools will have a cap for the maximum they'll award.
You can rank the participating colleges by how much they'll offer, so I clicked the #1 and #2 schools just to see what the numbers were.
Wingate U - $60,750
Stetson U - $43,455
Here's my take: for a high-need family, I'm not sure you'd end up with anything from Raise.me that you wouldn't have gotten through a regular, need-based application. In our case, none of these amounts were better than our results from the schools' various net price calculators. For a middle income/doughnut hole family, though, or a full freight family at a school where merit aid is unlikely, and where knocking 10k/yr or more off tuition would really come in handy? Seems like it might be a good deal.
I'll continue to enter S's info, but I won't be counting on this to save our bacon where aid is concerned.
If you read the fine print, Raise.me says participating schools have guaranteed that if you select them by the deadline listed on the site, are accepted and enroll, that the school will award you financial aid that at least equals the amount shown in your profile for that school. There is no guarantee that the award will stack with anything else you may have, though. The schools also reserve the right to verify whatever accomplishments you claimed to earn each microscholarship.

How long can I continue to receive Cal Grants, and what happens after it expires?
So I entered college Fall 2013, and received Cal Grant B. So, how many more year/semesters am I eligible for Cal Grant after this school year, and will I be able to receive a State University Grant afterwards? I am a bit confused.
My school has this "Financial Aid Meter" thing, and it shows I can receive a Cal Grant for the next school year, but that would be over 4 years? I dunno. It is confusing like I said. Does anyone know the answer to these questions?

Help with Merit Aid
Hi all,
I have a daughter junior at well regarded urban high school for gifted in major city. We won't qualify for financial aid. We are starting the process of looking for schools with big merit aid. Her stats are near perfect SAT (800V, 770M) taking again to try for perfect score), 3.99 unweighted GPA (one A-). She had 3 AP classes last year, 4 this year and 4-5 next year. somewhat light on ECs due to illness (no IEP) and introvertedness. But 4 years youth symphony, music tutor underprivileged kids, 3rd chair cello in top HS orchestra. Hopes to intern at summer music camp she has attended every year since 7th grade. Job taking care of neighborhood chickens! A few others but nothing earth shattering. Has disabled autistic sibling (many medical bills and special education limits our ability to fully fund college). Any ideas on where to look?

Should I take Posse??
I'm a Dickinson college posse finalist and although I'm happy to have come this far, I don't know if I wanna accept this scholarship. While I do like Dickinson college, I find myself more attracted to colleges in New York like Skidmore, Vassar and NYU. My GPA is a 4.0 my college essay is pretty well done,I have good extracurriculars and although my SAT is only 1140, with Heop for NYU and Skidmore I think I will be fine. Overall I'm pretty sure I can get into those colleges with good financial aid(especially since both my parents are unemployed.) I'm just confused and concerned about what to do. My counselors seem to want me to take Posse but my family doesn't seem to want me to take it, and I have no idea what I want to do. What would you do in this situation? My deadline in November 7th.

529 Plan withdrawals and grad school expenses
DS is graduating this spring with a bachelor’s degree in 3 years instead of 4. There will be about 25K left over in his 529. His original plan was to continue to medical school, so I was not concerned about the left over funds. Now he wants to take a gap year and then go on to graduate school for his PhD. According to him not only PhD students do not pay, but they get paid a stipend from the university, and they may have to work for it. (Of course this is not the reason why he changed his mind:)
My question is how do we make 529 withdrawals in this case? Can we withdraw money to cover his rent and food if no bills are issued by the school? I have an option of transferring his balance to his younger brother’s 529. Comments?

Can You Add Schools to a CSS Like You Do on FAFSA?
I'm applying ED to a school that requires the CSS be submitted to them by Nov. 15. Can I fill the CSS profile out, submit it to the school, and then go back and add more schools to it like I can on FAFSA? My friend already filled hers out and said she had to add all of her schools at once; I'm still a little unsure about the other schools I want to apply to, and don't want to rush to make the decision by Nov. 15. I also don't want to pay to send the CSS to a whole bunch of other schools if I'm accepted ED to my top-choice.

Pomona College financial aid?
How generous are they known to be? Assuming family income is 29,000 for five members with $0 contribution from parents. I am expecting a little bit of outside scholarship money (I don't know how much yet). I really don't want to go into debt.

US Co-signer
I was wondering about loans offered in US for international students. I've read about it but that was little help. What I'm clear about is that I will need a co-signer, who would probably be my aunt. I have a few questions which probably sound stupid but I'd appreciate it if you answered.
1. What's the limit?
2. Minimum rate of interest...?
3. When do I start repaying?
4. What if I do not have a job after graduation?
Any help would be appreciated. :)
P.S I am a sophomore but I'd like to be prepared early. I am the first child and my sister will start college the same year that I will be done with it. My parents and I are currently discussing the possible options regarding paying for college. Also if you have any idea of scholarships for international students that are not university specific, then please do share.
Thank you.

Can I still get financial aid if I have debt with a school?
So here's the deal. I had all the credits required to graduate with my Associates degree; however, the school never sent me a degree or updated my program of study saying that I had completed it. I didn't think anything of it. I just registered for more classes including a few retakes. During this semester is when I went to the admissions office and asked about my degree. They told to come back after class and it would be ready. I came back when my class was over and it was ready just they said. Here is where it gets weird. After I recieved my degree the school updated my program of study to complete which made me not eligible for the financial aid I had already gotten. A few days later they dropped me from all of my classes for non-payment. Mind you I had been going to class 2 to 3 weeks already and I had received a refund and everything. Now they are telling me I owe them over 6,000 dollars. Now I'm afraid that I won't be able to transfer to a 4yr university and continue on with my education like I planned because of this debt I owe because of a technicality. What should I do?
