Brandman University software glitch

I have been caught up in this "software: glitch and I am supposed to receive full Cal Grant funds (which I have waited to access until this year) and the total Cal Grant I am owed this year is in excess of 10,000. Along with this grant, I too have an EFC of 0 and have requested the maximum loans for a senior, (which is my current status). The reasons Brandman's financial aid has not been released when I ask, have been many, but this "software" glitch has been going on for months now and if some of us got caught up in their screw up, why should the hardship be handed off to the students who are PAYING BIG BUCKS for classes? It shouldn't! The fault falls in the lap of the University and if they had not made the mistakes-bottom line, we wouldn't be suffering, whether it was their software developers or who ever they want to blame this week, WE ARE THE PAYING CUSTOMERS (and we pay alot ) !!! They haven't kept their end of the contract we entered into during the admissions process. By the way, my gpa is above 3.5 and carry a full schedule-nothing preventing aid.....it is just poor business on Brandmans part to cause students such incredible stress for financial aid. I am sure everyone in that office collects their paychecks and doesn't give a second thought to us or to the issues they promised would be resolved by now....AND WE pay their salaries.....disgusting. I had to take out a personal loan with a high interest rate because of their incompetence.

Loan or no loan?

The answer is quite obvious that avoiding loans is the best if you are able to do so. I actually have a question regarding that, though. I am grateful that right now I am able to avoid loans and pay the remaining costs out-of-pocket. I'm wondering though, should I just continue making monthly payments and not taking out a loan or should I take out a loan and put the monthly payments towards it? I was only thinking about this because what if something does come up that has to be taken care of immediately and end up not having any extra money to make a payment or two. My parents are the ones who are actually paying for it all and I actually feel bad about that to a certain extent. They pay for the necessities, but if there is a luxury item I want I have to pay for it myself; which is understandable. What do you guys think I should do? Just completely avoid the loan or take out the loan and pay it off month-by-month instead?

federal loans and outside scholarships

I have heard that everyone qualifies for unsubsidized loans regardless of income. I have also heard that outside scholarships first replace the student contribution (loans, work) in a financial aid package. So, can outside scholarships prevent students from having the option of taking a federal student loan?

Financial Aid Applications for Parents Divorced after 2015

My biological parents divorced in 2006 and my dad got remarried in 2012. He filed his 2015 tax returns jointly with his wife at that point. They recently got divorced and it was finalized about a week ago. If I were to include her income on my dad's income report, I wouldn't get any financial aid at all because she made quite a bit of money. Because the total income will be the sum of their incomes, how do I specify to FAFSA, CSS, and the other college financial aid reports that they are now divorced and only his income will be used to pay for college from now on?

Advice on Appealing a Transfer Scholarship...While already enrolled

I will try to make a long story short, I started at SMU's undergrad B-school this semester. I transferred with 55 credit hours, but 7 of them were taken over the summer. Getting admitted and finishing up summer requirements was a mess, I wasn't officially admitted until 3 days before classes, and things were pretty manic for the majority of this semester. I was surprised when I didn't get any academic money when I transferred because I had a 4.0, and assumed that I would have been considered for merit scholarships. I need scholarships and a half-time job if I am going to be able to stay at SMU (it's an amazing school and I desperately want to stay here), so I was looking at scholarship options tonight. I realized that I missed out on a half-tuition scholarship when I transferred because the 7 credit hours that I took over the summer weren't considered and I only transferred in with 48. The scholarship required 50 credit hours. I applied in January and at no point did anyone from admissions, financial aid (I didn't get my financial aid award until the last week of July), or anyone else with the university tell me that the summer courses wouldn't transfer and I would need to take one extra spring course to save ~$22,000. There was constructive knowledge, but no actual knowledge (I should have known and am not exculpating myself of any responsibility). I am meeting with my academic advisor for spring course selection tomorrow and will ask him his advice, but how would people with more experience advise that I approach the financial aid office about this? I realize that the chances of getting this awarded beginning in the spring are slim to none, but I have to pursue it because if I don't get it I'm likely leaving SMU for SUNY Albany, which is like leaving the Ritz Carolton to stay in a Motel 6 in a bad neighborhood that just had the crime scene tape removed from the front door. My game plan at the moment is just to put on my best begging shoes, beg for help from the financial aid office, and hope that God has been listening to me because I would be absolutely devastated if I had to leave here.

If I apply to a college, am I automatically eligible to receive merit scholarships? Do I still need to apply for them?

Stacking scholarships question

I am asking this question for a friend who has a senior applying to college but does not want to start her own account here and ask. Her son is applying to a school that does not allow stacking of the scholarships that are offered by the school and if offered will get the highest offer. However, the mother's question is, can the student then stack outside scholarships if he wins any? She can find information about not stacking the school's scholarships but not about outside scholarships on the website. (They will not qualify for federal or other need based aid except unsubsidized loan).

Scholarships for zero financial aid?

Our income overall for the past 6 years has been extremely low, but dad had that one job in 2015 which, even though it ended after a month or two, gave an income that was just a thousand dollars too high to qualify for most financial aid (given mostly to families with income under 100k). Are there any scholarships that are given specifically for families who are getting literally no financial aid where they intend to enroll?

CSS Profile- Deceased Non-Custodial Parent

Hey! So, I recently applied ED to Brandeis University and EA to other schools, I just found out I have to fill out a CSS Profile for them. I filled it out and stated that my mother were widowed but the CSS Profile is still asking for my Non-Custodial parent information. What am I supposed to do?

School revoked a $900 scholarship mid semester without telling me

So I had been receiving a $900 per semester scholarship from my music department. I had to partake in a voice studio class and two ensambles. I have had a severe medical issue this semester and had to medically drop two of those class and be removed fron the third (the teacher actually canceled most of the rehersals anyway) This was going to be my last semester receiving it due to unrelated reasons. I get a very angry call from my parents today after they received a bill for $900 because the scholarship had been revoked, in November. There was no meeting, no email, nothing but a very sudden Bill. Is this legal? Especially since my drops were from documented medical issues?

Dependent/Independent Question

Trying to figure out if I should be independent or dependent. From what I have seen it seems I need to apply as dependent, but honestly I am still not exactly sure. So basically I go to school full time, live on campus, and pay for everything school related. I also have a child and that is where things get a little gray. I provide all of his support(clothes, food, etc.) except he obviously doesn't live with me in my dorm room. He lives with my girlfriend at her parent's house. So from what I have read cash-support her parents provide is considered support I provide for my child, but in kind support they may be giving does not(???). Adding on to that from what I have read since my name isn't on their bills this would be considered in-kind support for the child thus I wouldn't be able to count rent etc. as my support. Does anyone have knowledge into this type of situation to shed some light on it? Is my thinking correct?

To Delegate (or NOT) FAFSA and CSS work to third party.......Please help and comment with thoughts

This past week, the owner of the firm College Funding Specialists in Austin, TX, presented at the Round Rock Public Library. At that session he promised a free session at his office to discuss our finances - and it (as expected) turned out to be a sales pitch for his services. My question for the guru's on here is - has anyone on here used an agency to help with filling out the FAFSA and CSS profile? Were they of any help - do you think you would have fared (or come out) better had you done all the spadework on your own? Would you sign a 'Power of Attorney' form and pay a $1395 upfront fee as well as a $39.95 monthly fee for the duration of your college education (4 years)

I have not applied for any scholarships yet (I am in 12th grade). The reason for it is because I am going to a community college first and than transferring to a university after my first year. I was wondering, can scholarships transfer? Like if i go to a community college with my state scholarship and than transfer to a university will that said scholarship transfer with me?.

Any hope of a merit scholarship with these stats?

I had assumed my daughter would go to the University of Washington as it is a 10 minute drive from our house and a great school. I have enough saved to pay tuition for the state school for her. However, she has decided she wants to go somewhere more interesting and out of state tuition is very high...especially in California, which is where most of the school she is looking at are. I have a second child one year older than her that is in college as well, so coming up with tuition beyond the 50k I have saved is going to be a struggle. Our family has a combined income that would make needs based aid all but impossible. She is first in her class of 600 with a weighted GPA of 4.65. She got a 2260 on her SATs last year, but retook them this year...so it might be better....we don't know yet. She doesn't have a lot of extra-curriculars because she has a disability that keeps her from doing much physically and has a lot of drs appointments and treatments that made after school activities and volunteer work very difficult on top of her rigorous courses. She is in ASB and writes/performs original music, but it isn't in any organised program. Does she have any chance of a merit scholarship or are we looking at 150k in debt?

EFC Question

My family has an income just under 100k, for 5 people. 2 in college as freshman in 2017 (twins). The EFC given through an email is 035020 Is this per year or in total? Also, is this the number that colleges will try to target when it comes to financial aid/merit money, if they see fit? I'm just a little confused on what this all means lol

What are the Merit Money "best value" schools for a STEM student

$

I kind of asked this question for New England in an earlier thread. But sadly there isn't a lot of big merit in New England anymore -- less than there was even 5 years ago. So we are expanding our search. What are the best* schools for STEM majors that offer substantial** merit scholarships that are either guaranteed, or can be at least somewhat reliably predicted*** and based primarily on "stats" rather than leadership, community service, sports, ECs etc. *best -- a school that has a strong reputation, preferably nationally, either overall or for a particular program -- this doesn't necessarily mean US News rankings, particularly if there is some special honors or other program that is more highly regarded than the school overall **substantial merit -- merit awards approaching full tuition for 4 years of study or that otherwise leave less than 30K per year to be covered by the family (including books, travel, everything) ***somewhat reliably predicted -- if a school doesn't offer guaranteed aid for particular stats or NMF status, but we have reliable historical information about what could reasonably be expected, that's fine too. What I'm trying to avoid is schools that offer a handful of full tuition or full ride scholarships, with hundreds of qualified applicants. I know about University of Alabama -- what else is out there that we ought to look into? Our state flagship (UVM) has unfortunately substantially reduced their merit money, but is still doable due to in-state tuition. The kid is a sophomore, so doesn't really have any stats yet to share, and doesn't know what he wants to major in, other than something in the STEM array of careers. His primary EC is drama.
