Freaking out over insane EFC!

Hi guys.. So I just found out that the EFC I received is 22k... There is no way my family can afford this. Quite simply, the FASFA did not take into account my mom's student loan debt (85k) and the cost of living in Northern Virginia.. They can contribute around 8k a year... My noncustodial parent doesn't file taxes and has a wife with cancer so he also can not help... I really want to go to UVA, but I don't know how I am going to afford it... Does the CSS Profile help with understanding these types of things.. Thanks.

What do I do if my new stepparent did not file taxes for 2015?

Is there any difference in the fin aid/ scholarships schools offer before submitting facts and after submitting facts ? Our child applied to 3 schools so far. She was offered decent merit scholarships with the acceptance letters. That was before we submitted the faces, which we just did to all three schools yesterday. Does anyone know if they will offer more based on the FAFSA or is that not done ? We are in Texas and child applied to state colleges. Thank you

If I Can't Repay A Stafford Loan That's In My Name, Will My Parents Have To Repay It?

Hi!! 1st post here. So: I'm not in college yet just considering it. My parents don't need to get parent plus loans since I'm going to junior/community college. But, if I graduate from junior college and can't repay the loans right away, will my parents have to pay for anything? Since they would help me fill out the FAFSA with their information, would the lenders make them pay for a Stafford loan?

Hello, I am a international student trying to go to graduate school for a masters in Computer Science. I am applying to CMU, MIT, Princeton, and other top programs. I understand that most top schools meet 100% demonstrated financial need for undergraduate admission. Is there something like that offered by top colleges for their graduate schools? I am ineligible for FAFSA, which is a problem. PLEASE HELP

Changes to financial aid from college

Last time I was in school was the fall semester of 2015 due to pregnancy. When I registered my financial had not kicked in, in time to purchase books for my classes, so I was told I had to take a manly loan (idk if I'm spelling it correctly). Basically it's a loan that will be deducted from My financial aid until I was awarded. I purchased my books and was able to start classes. I returned this fall and my financial aid was processed on time but now it reads the was a correction made by the college. I think it was because they told me my financial For this year can cover the debt for the manly loan that was never deducted from 2015. I got an email saying that students are being getting financial aid awards but I still have a balance due. My question is when the college makes a correction how long does it usually take for it to be revised and completed? Will the balance on my student account be covered by the financial aid? Also, I never got a financial aid award how does that work?

Financial Aid for ED Students?

I am considering applying Early Decision to Johns Hopkins (before you say "the deadline is passed!" know that I was given a 3-day extension). My application is entirely complete (besides the ED form from my counselor) but I'm suddenly having second thoughts. JHU is my absolute dream school, with everything I could want from a college, but I'm not sure if it's worth graduating 50k in debt or whatever. Their FinAid net price calculator says that, after a signing a $3,500 loan, my net price would be a few dollars upwards of 4k. This seemed good at first, because the annual price is usually like 60k for them. However, I heard that ED students sometimes get less financial aid because the school knows that you can't turn them down. Even if it sounds bad, I'd be willing enough to slide into some debt to go to JHU, but I don't want to be crushed under a ridiculous amount of student loans. I'd have to submit the ED app in 3 days, on Nov. 4th. Does anybody have any advice for me?

Reporting Social Security on IDOC

Hello, I asked a similar question about reporting social security on CSS and we determined that social security under the students name should not be reported. However, in IDOC one of my schools is requesting student income in 2015 and says to report untaxed income, such as SSI or military benefits. It does not specifically mention or rule out social security (just to clarify, my income is such that the social security was untaxed in 2015). Should I report it or is this another form where I am not supposed to like CSS? Thank you!

FAFSA - - Ex-Spouse Pushing to Have My Infomation On Form Instead of His - Fishy?

Hello, I am new to this forum, and new to financial aid discussion in general. I am looking to get advice whether or not my ex-spouse is pushing me to do something that would be considered fraudulent. We divorced four years ago. His income is about three times more than mine, or more. The kids technically live at his house more than half of the year. I receive no child support, and he claims the kids as deductions on his tax return. Lately he has been really pushing for me to give him my most recent tax return so he can "have an accountant run some numbers" he said. He said that when it comes to the kids' college it would be best for me to claim the kids as dependents so that my income is used on financial aid forms instead of his. This seems fishy because the kids are not my dependents. He claims all four of them on his tax return each year. He also pays for the bulk of their expenses, like clothing, activities fees, etc. Wouldn't the custody agreement need to be modified in order for the kids to be my "dependents?" I don't want to lie on a form just so the kids can get better financial aid. It's not worth breaking the law for this. If anyone has experience with this, or knows what I should do, any tips would be helpful.

How long can I continue to receive a Cal Grant, and what happens after it expires?

So I entered college Fall 2013, and received Cal Grant B. So, how many more year/semesters am I eligible for Cal Grant after this school year, and will I be able to receive a State University Grant afterwards? I am a bit confused. My school has this "Financial Aid Meter" thing, and it shows I can receive a Cal Grant for the next school year, but that would be over 4 years? I dunno. It is confusing like I said. Does anyone know the answer to these questions?

In the Parent's Business section of CollegeBoard's Profile, the directions ask you to give information on your parents business(es), and my parents have 2. However I don't see anywhere that lets me add a second business, only a first one. How/where should I this info? Thanks in advance!

My father did not pay taxes, whilst my mother did. Will I not receive FAFSA financial aid?

1) My father and mother both have SSN 2) My father and mother came from Central America a long time ago. 3) They are separated, but my father decided he'd come live with my mom and her boyfriend (around 6 months ago) because he's trying to save money to move to another state (I think?). 4) My mother filed her 2015 taxes as head of household, as my father wasn't living with us during the time. Obviously none of his taxes were part of that, since he didn't live with us. The FAFSA site asked for his share of taxes, so I put zero.

"Atypical" 2015 Financial Data and FAFSA and CSS Profile

Our 2015 financial data are atypical because we had to exercise the employee stock grant before the expiration and it really inflated our income. Obviously, we don't want to represent this particular situation as our ordinary and typical year's income. While filling out both FAFSA and CSS Profile, I noticed that there's no place in FAFSA where I could explain this situation, while there is a box in CSS Profile where it asks you to provide any extenuating circumstances. My question is: is it enough to explain the specific reason why 2015 is an atypical income year for us in the CSS Profile box, or do I need to provide additional documents to both FAFSA and CSS Profile? If so, where do I send these additional documents when neither sites offer any means of attaching these documents? Do I need to send them to each college's financial aid office?

Sale of primary home with 2 in college

I currently have 2 in college, remarried 5 years ago and recently sold my home that sat on the market for over 2 years in a depressed area. Now that the house has sold and I made minimal profit, Im left with considering my options of cash on hand to pay the next 3.5 years of college costs. Cd's vs a late 529 plan. I would like to have 30,000 a year saved for 2 years. and 15,000 for upcoming semester and then one year with 13,000. The financial planner felt the 529 was really to late to enter into. I do not see our income rising over the next 3.5 years. Any increase in tuition, or room and board I should be able to manage from our current income. I also do not have a plan in place for any summer school or study abroad costs, but girls would have small student loans to cover those costs.. The above costs would utilize all moneys from the house sale and current balance of savings I have held onto since my divorce that were earmarked for girls education. Our prior 529 has been given to my ex husband to allow him to pay his share of costs. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Colleges not receiving FAFSA?

I submitted my FAFSA in the beginning of October, but it's not showing up in of my schools' financial aid portals. ("No financial aid documents received" or something of that nature). All of my scores and whatnot have been successfully sent. Is there something I'm supposed to do after the FAFSA says "processed successfully" in order to send them to my colleges?
